You Are Not a Graphic Designer...
I am sure you, yes you there reading this, go about your day seeing all of these beautifully kerned (space between 2 letters) and tracked (space between multiple letters) words throughout your day without even knowing. This video will give you great insight into one of the first topics to learn when learning the basics of graphic design- the rules associated with typography. Understanding this is the first step to becoming a graphic designer.
Like one of my professors, Tuan, said in my Advanced Typography class, “You are not a graphic designer, if you do not understand type.”
My Learning Curve
When I first started learning graphic design, I was mainly obsessed with playing with type. I would make letters larger, skinnier, take on a shape, and do all of these other crazy Frankenstein things! I never really learned about all the rules associated with design until I took my typography class as a freshman in college. My mind was blown by all the rules and ways you could use type.
Your Graphic Design Challenge
I challenge you to apply one rule from this video to a part of your life. Whether it be the next time you write you next essay for a class or on the next text you send to your mom. I am sure she will be interested in what you learned about typography…I mean who wouldn’t.
