There are always questions that people have and you might have the answer. Blogging is a great way to share your passions with others, give advice based on your experiences, or to just use as an outlet to express yourself through words. Speaking from personal experience, blogging is really fun and helps me become a better writer. If you are someone who loves to write or wants to get back in the grove, blogging is for you! Try it out for a month and see if you love it. You never know what opportunities you can get out of it (jobs!). I will be giving a beginner overview in this handy dandy blog about: picking a topic, choosing a website host, planning, and reading analytics. Enjoy!
Pick a Topic You Love
It is very important to pick a topic that you can write on endlessly and that you will not get bored of! Sit down in a quiet place or at a local coffee shop and jot down some potential topics. A way to get started is by writing down things you love, shows you like to watch, your hobbies, or other things you like to do. For example, if you are someone who loves sports, write a blog post about your favorite teams. I really love graphic design and marketing so I like to write about topics related to those.
Choose a Website Host
Picking a website host can be a little tricky. I would recommend using WordPress or Blogger. They have a free blog option for users where you can post to a blog without having to pay a monthly fee! Once you pick a website host, design the way that you want your website to look. This is the best part! Choose a template that you are living for and add an about you page so people can learn a little about who you are. You should at least have these pages on your website: Blog, About Me, and Contact page.
Planning and Execution
When planning your post, make goals for how often you want to write. A great start would be to write one post a week or write 2 post a month. This would be a great way to ease into blogging without killing off your blog because you feel like you need to post to much! Do not kill your blog! After you figure out how often you would like to post, make a list of possible topics you would want to write about and pick one you would like to start writing on. A good strategy is to plan out what topic you would want to write for each day you would like to post. For example, May 2nd, May 15th, and May 30th you want to post so jot down on your calendar what you will post each of those days. If you start doing this you will be making something called a content calendar. This is an awesome skill to have if you would like to go into social media marketing (little hint about potential job). After you have written your first blog post, make sure to proof read it and post it to your website! Now what. Well, no one will be able to read your new post if they do not know about it. Use your social media channels to share your link to your post and explain why they should read it. Then watch the views on your post go up!
Analyze Your Analytics
In WordPress and Blogger, you are able to look at your analytics for your post (things like page views, comments, time on a page, demographics, etc.). For beginners who are just starting a blog, look at your page views and comments for now. After you have posted a couple of blog post, look at how many views each one got. Which ones have the highest views? This may tell you that your audience likes what you wrote on one post rather than the other. This will help you come to conclusions about how to write future content!
